The 2011 Los Olivos Chardonnay is stunning again but as this was a challenging vintage not much of this incredible Chardonnay is available. The flavors are intense with fruit coming from the Maldonado estate vineyard in Carneros. The vineyard is a 10-acre rectangle, planted in the dark, gravelly clay characteristic of Carneros and surrounding areas whose soil originated in the ancient reaches of the San Pablo Bay. Medium to full bodied Chardonnay, we love this wine for its pineapple, banana and floral notes.
A compelling 2011, rich, smooth and layered, with ripe pear fruit and subtle honey, butterscotch and honeydew notes, gaining a dash of oak and ending with a hint of fig. Drink now through 2020. 860 cases made. –JL 92 Points
Consulting winemaker Jean Hoefliger: Hoefliger's relationship with the Maldonado family began at Newton Vineyards in 2001. The Maldonado's managed the vineyard practices at Newton Vineyard while Jean was making the infamous naturally fermented, unfined and unfiltered wines. Through their collaboration in the vineyards and making wines which reflect the true greatness of California terroir, the Maldonado family decided to expand their relationship to have Jean make the boutique production of Maldonado Family Vineyards as well. Their shared vision of precise vineyard practices as well as producing wines which show the extraordinary terroir of the Maldonado vineyards has created a shared passion for making the best wine they possibly can.
