This is the inaugural release of this wine from winemaker Dave Phinney of Orin Swift. Joining his eponymous list of wines like Prisoner, Machete and Abstract fame, the D66 is a project based in the south of France in the village of Maury. Most of the vines are a minimum of 60 years old with some parcels even older than that. The soils are predominately schist, so the vines really struggle producing deep dark fruit with bold concentration. The wine is the classic Orin Swift style, composed of 80% grenache with 12% syrah and 8% carignan rounding out the blend. It is opulent with plum, cherry, chambord flavors followed by Asian spicebox, minerality and good acidity keeping the wine structured and balanced. Very limited!
